who’s who: Luke – digital designer / spider-man

We’d love to get to know you, but don’t worry we’ll break the ice first! Read through so you can get to know us a little better, that is of course when we aren’t headfirst in creating, brainstorming, emailing and all-round solving.

Enjoy and feel free to share a bit about yourself!

What projects have you been working on lately?

Every day brings with it its own exciting challenges and projects. Anything from concepts for the next Nespresso promotional campaign, catalogue adverts for Nestle or Cerebos, mapping out the UX for a new client who wants a refresh of their website, or complete end-to-end digital communications for American Express. And as a hybrid designer/developer I have the ability to work across both the initial design and the coded final product.

What are you finding the most rewarding and/or positively challenging in your role at the moment?

As a designer and developer (coder), I create a lot of digital content for our clients, particularly eDMs. A recent project has seen me create and replicate a suite of eDMs for different global markets, including a Cantonese version for the Hong Kong market. Trying to make sure the copy is correct and the layout is perfect when it is in another language with different characters was challenging, but the final result is quite beautiful.

Anything that’s got you glued to the screen at the moment?

Marvel superhero movies. Full stop.

This includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe (The Avengers), the Marvel / Fox Universe (X-Men, Deadpool) and Sony’s Marvel Universe (Spider-Man, Venom). I swear I could watch any of these movies at any time, for any reason, except for Toby Maguire as Emo Spidey in Spider-Man 3.

How would you describe your style at the moment?

Being a superhero nerd, I have quite a collection of tees from an online retailer called TeeTurtle. I recently purchased a new bunch of shirts as I am about to throw out some older ones or retire them to gym gear only. The artists that come up with the prints are amazing and they have an almost cartoonish style that suits my personality well. Who needs buttons when you have heroes (and villains).

Favourite go-to meal?

My partner is a trained chef who has worked in hatted restaurants, so I really have to step up my game whenever I cook. My favourite meal to whip up is definitely a variety of pies. I make it up as I go along, and my recent creations include a chicken curry pie, Mexican beef pie and I plan on making a satay chicken pie in the very near future. I make the entire thing from scratch except for the pastry. My secret ingredient in all my meals is chilli powder. Love the burn!

Watching anything interesting lately? Give us the low down!

I am currently trying to smash through Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3 on Netflix. It has turned really really dark and oppressive. As a self-confessed Marvel nerd, this is one of the best superhero TV series I have ever watched. It follows the story of a blind man turned vigilante on the streets of Hells Kitchen, New York and his attempts to thwart corruption and crime in his city.

We’ve all got guilty pleasures – what’s yours currently?

My guilty pleasure is collecting Lego. Anything from the trains of the 80’s to the 2018 release of the first ever Lego Rollercoaster. Each set I purchase has to be snuck into the house so that my partner doesn’t see how much money I’ve spent on plastic bricks. My daily blog of choice is either brickset.com to get the low-down on the latest Lego set news or brothers-brick to see amazing fan creations by the world’s greatest builders.

We love to learn! Share something new you’ve experienced or learnt?

During the winter months I haven’t been scuba diving as much (the water has been way too cold) so I have recently taken to the outdoors with mates and started rock-climbing in the Blue Mountains. Depending on the location and the route we decide to climb, we can be on a wall that is anywhere between 12m to 100m+. The most rewarding climb I have recently completed was called ‘Sweet Dreams’, a beautiful 120m wall at Sublime Point Katoomba. When you are near the top you can see the back side of the Three Sisters which not many people have ever seen. It took around 4.5hrs to complete with just two of us on the wall. If you want to see what it looks like, check out the whole rundown of the climb here.
