Pantone has announced its 2019 Colour of the Year and we’re living for it, pun intended. This year we are taken to the depths of the ocean and gifted the effervescent Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral.
The overriding influence for 2019 is the connection to our environment, both real and virtual. With digital technology and social media increasingly finding its way into every day life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. With this in mind, Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral hugs us with the emotional nourishment we need and provides us comfort and optimism in our continually shifting environment.
As the 2019 colour of the year also speaks to our natural environment, it reflects our growing concern of the environment and the importance of preserving it, Vice President of Pantone’s colour consulting unit Laurie Pressman explains
Top of mind was the arresting beauty we see in nature and the importance of preserving the environment. Think of coral reefs, they provide shelter and sustenance to marine life and here we are watching them disappear.

Picking the Colour of the Year isn’t easy and not for everyone. Pantone colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute are examined yearly, ensuring near perfect vision and colour accuracy. To arrive at the colour selection each year, chosen candidates from the Pantone Colour Institute comb the world looking for new colour influences, monitor trend analysis and focus on social and cultural movements within society.
